Matt was born and raised in Southwest Michigan.  As a lifelong resident of Hartford, Michigan, Matt graduated from Hartford High School in 1989.  The son of a small businessman, and a teacher, Matt had aspirations to go to West Point.  He was appointed to the Military Academy and earned a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Aerospace) and was a varsity letter winner in wrestling.

Upon graduation, Matt was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry and was stationed at Kirchgoens, Germany with 3rd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment (Mechanized Infantry) where he deployed to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia with United Nation Peacekeepers on Operation Able Sentry.  He would again deploy in January 1996 to Bosnia-Herzegovina as a member of the NATO led implementation force (IFOR) to keep the peace.

After returning from Europe, Matt decided to volunteer for Special Forces.  He was assessed, selected, and trained to be a Green Beret.  While assigned to 1st Special Forces Group, Matt was deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom Philippines, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He led troops in combat operations in South Central Iraq, and gained a great appreciation for the complex nature of today's threats.  Matt has traveled and lived all over the world serving America.

In 2013, Matt decided to take the next step in his life and return home to Michigan.  He spent the last year working for Golden Plain Farms as the Director of Business Development. He has seen first-hand the struggles of farmers and small businesses in Southwest Michigan.  After many discussions with his family, Matt decided to run for State Representative to give back to the community that gave him so much.
